To celebrate a civil marriage, in the first place it is necessary to process the civil marriage application in the corresponding court. In the case of Palafrugell, the Magistrate’s Court is the appropriate venue. By default, the ceremony is officiated by the Justice of the Peace, but the parties may request that the mayor or a councillor perform the ceremony (always by express delegation of the mayor).

The following documents must be presented:

  • Photocopy of National Identity Document (DNI), passport or residency card of the interested parties
  • Up-to-date birth certificate
  • Family record book
  • Certificate from the municipal government where the parties have resided the last two years

Next the procedure involves:

  • Completing the form which is sent to la Bisbal.  Public exhibition for 1 month
  • Signature of 2 witnesses
  • Resolution. The date is chosen to sign the certificate in the court. This is only available during the business week. If the parties wish to celebrate the marriage in a Town Hall, which can take place on the weekend, they need to transfer the request there
  • Time frame: Approximately 3 months
